How to Get from Tulum to Bacalar (and Why You Should Go)

Our journey from Tulum to Bacalar was refreshingly smooth. We opted to rent a car from GetRentACar, which tends to be one of the most reliable and affordable rental companies in Mexico. Driving gave us the flexibility to explore the region at our own pace—with the added bonus of impromptu coconut stops.

We stayed at Khaban Bacalar Hotel Boutique, nestled about 15 minutes from the main town. The peaceful setting and stunning views made the extra drive more than worthwhile.

💡 Tip: If you’re considering hiring a car in Mexico, I recommend checking prices on GetRentACar—they usually have some of the best deals, and the process is fairly painless.

No Car? Try the Tren Maya

For those without wheels, the new Tren Maya is a game-changer. It links key Yucatán destinations—including Tulum and Bacalar—offering a sustainable, comfortable, and scenic way to travel. It’s ideal if you’d rather stare out at the jungle than at your GPS.

🛤️ I’ve written a full guide to the Tren Maya — check it out if you’re curious about routes, costs, and my take on the experience.

Other methods of getting from Tulum to Bacalar are🚍 bus or 🚕 taxi. Flying isn’t really an option unless you want to travel through Mexico City.

2. Explore Museo del Fuerte de San Felipe

Get a dose of Bacalar’s pirate history at this colonial fort-turned-museum. Bonus: it has panoramic views of the lagoon.
🎟️ Tickets and tours available.

Yes, Bacalar has nightlife. These two spots bring live music, cocktails, and dancing to the otherwise tranquil town.
🍸 Reserve your Bacalar nightlife experience.

4. Take a Sailing Trip or Visit the Cenotes

Don’t miss the boat (literally). Although this tour was a little pricey it was the best day we had in Bacalar by far with breathtaking sunset views. We were quite lucky that we were able to reserve due to someone dropping out, so do ensure you book in advance to secure your spot! It is the best way to see the area’s famous cenotes and hidden corners.
⛵ Book your sailing trip in Bacalar to see Cenote Azul.

⛵Book your 4 hour private catamaran with drinks included (there are cheaper options available!)

5. Taste the Local Treats

🫔Hunt down a marquesita—a crispy crepe filled with anything from Nutella to cheese. It’s weirdly addictive. You’ll find them at food stalls near the plaza in the evening.

6. Professions Drone Photos (engagement idea?)

For those that are into romantic engagements, Bacalar is THE place to do it – the lake was made for it! I myself wasn’t quite ready. You guys have no such excuse.
